It’s a Leroy kind of day…
I think of him ALL the time. I love it when others do too. I love it when I hear from folks who have been so moved by his message on the “My Cancer” blog. Current cancer patients who read the blog and their care-givers read his words and are guided by his journey through cancer world too.
This was the case with Jason Cherish and his girlfriend, Morgan McCloskey.
I met them while shooting a video to support “Swim Across America.” Morgan and her sister Meredith will be swimming to support Jason as he struggles with colon cancer and some pretty rough treatment to push back on the disease. Jason reads Leroy’s blog. He’s told me many times, he’s gained strength and guidance from the Big Guy when he needs it most. Nothing makes me happier to hear.
Jason isn’t able to swim in this year’s September 23rd cancer fund raising event, but Morgan and Meredith sure are and the coolest thing happened today; I found out they are dedicating their swim in Leroy’s memory along with another cancer victim, Steve Hunt.
In their dedication write-up they say this honor is important to let Leroy and Steve’s “loved ones know that Leroy and Steve’s inspirational courage and spirit live on…”
This capped a day full of Leroy surprises for me….I picked up some film….yes film…from some old underwater cameras I’d taken to Hawaii recently, to use-up. What a surprise to find some images of Leroy from our final trip to Maui together. A another camera had some shots from Jackson Hole, Wyoming; another vacation from years ago. He looked great. Tan and strong and smiling, no hint of cancer’s shadow.
It was quite a day.
A Leroy kind of day.

Today I am catching up on all these posts, because I have been away. It made me smile to read about the gift of the photos. Leroy was one of those “aha people” and I think of him and the blog every time I hear the news that someone else has cancer.

I just wanted to thank the Leroy Township Fire Department for the woudfrenl dinner and Chinese dinner. It was a great time. I would suggest to both the VFW & the Fire Department to not schedule future fundraisers on the same date. It would be nice to see everything on the communite calendar. THANK YOU.

Oh Laurie, what a treasure to find those photos! I know you must have had many emotions running through your head and heart. I can just feel the love in your words…
I had a business conference in Salt Lake this week and on the plane out, I sat beside a couple who appeared to be just a little older than I and appeared to be such a loving couple. They were headed to Yellowstone and our conversation triggered all the memories of our vacation there several years ago. The entire trip I relived that vacation and watched their loving gestures to one another. Near the end of the flight, the husband pulled a blue bandana out of his pocket to “take care” of his nose. Jim had terrible sinus and allergy issues all his life and he was well known to always have that blue bandana at hand…it was just his trademark. When I saw that bandana it took every ounce of strength I had to maintain control. I guess he is still my guardian angel.
