Living on his mind…
She says she knows when his cancer is making a move before the doctors know and I believe her.
They are a couple who have been fighting metastatic colon cancer since 2008 and she’s become the mind reader to his disease. It never occurred to me that being a care giver means you are part mind reader, but it’s so true. I can think of a few occasions myself, when I knew something was going on with Leroy before any scan revealed the results.
She says she just has to look at him and she can tell….or maybe it’s his body language or his mood on a particular day, but she reads the tea leaves and the doctor listens. He’s a smart guy; he knows care givers have that extra sense.
He knows his disease will someday take his life but that doesn’t stop him from living every day and appreciating everyone around him and what they’ve done to help him push back on his cancer. He’s the first one to say “thank you” to the entire team who has lifted him all these years.
As he puts it, “I’ve tried everything that’s out there for my cancer and I’ve gone through ’em all.” And he keeps on trying.
This is a man with “living on his mind.”
He’s got good doctors, good treatment and a care giver with an eagle eye focused on him every minute. That’s a combination even cancer can’t mess with!

This story has brought tears to my eyes. I have two of my own and thigns like this hit real close to home. That could have been one of my two. My thoughts and prayers and with you both and with Ava. I can’t imagine how hard this all must be but I do believe staying as positive as possible truly helps. May you and your children be blessed and may your miracle be granted your baby deserves it.

Best wishes to both of them. Continue the fight and pray that good things happen.
Indulge me, please. Nothing to do with cancer but a really good story. Over many months, I have noticed an older man at my workout place. He and a trainer go through several exercises. He completes his workout and leaves. Doesn’t really talk much except to his trainer. So one day, he and I were leaving at the same time so I struck up a conversation. He is 82; lost his wife about 5 years ago to cancer, his name is Inky (wouldn’t tell me his real name but said everyone calls him Inky). I asked how he filled his time after he completed his workouts. Could have knocked me over with a feather!!!!!
He has arranged with some grocery stores and restaurants to let him come by several days a week to pickup the foodstuffs they were going to discard. So he makes his rounds, loads the food into his car and drives to the inner city of Atlanta (a neighborhood we’d avoid). There at an abandoned church, a lady and her helpers have established and run a pre-school. Resources and food are in short supply. Inky arrives with the food, the homeless guys who gather there (they know Inky and that with his arrival, there is a chance they’ll get a meal after the kids are fed) help him unload his car and take the food inside. One day Inky was busy unloading, left his keys in the car with the motor running, soon a homeless man came walking into the church with Inky’s keys.
Some days when he makes his rounds to the stores, the quality and perhaps even quantity of the food is suspect. So he goes to the deli and buys enough deli meats to ensure that the kids are fed (spends $300-400/mo of his money). An article appeared in the local paper about him and his good deeds ( he was reluctant to cooperate with the story not wanting to draw attention to himself).
Angels do walk amongst us. Inky is the guardian angel for a very small pre-school in inner city Atlanta. A quiet, unassuming man, reticent to talk much but goes about his days doing much good for others. What an example for all of us!!

Im so sorry you have to go through all this pain. Nobody dversees to go through something like this. I have a niece who is a year old and if something like this happened to her I don’t know how I would manage. I commend you for all the strength you have for your little girl.
